Getting a Seat at the BIG Table

Session Description: Supply Management has worked its way out of the "back rooms" of companies to a place in the same room as corporate disciplines like Finance, Sales, Marketing, HR, Legal, Audit and IT; but in most cases Supply Management has been relegated to the "kids table" during big gatherings. Yes, we are in the room, but we are not really heard, unless someone is speaking for us at the BIG table where all the real influencers sit. As a corporate discipline, Supply Management still needs sponsorship from the CFO, COO or CIO to really get the attention of the CEO. Why is Supply Management as a corporate discipline responsible for a large percentage of the spend (and cost savings) still relegated to the kids table? How does Supply Management move from the kids table to the coveted position at the BIG table in all corporate meetings, including corporate board meetings? The solution lies in what these other business disciplines learn about Supply Management while they are in training. More colleges and universities are implementing Supply Chain Management tracks and/or programs. How does the academic rigor of Supply Chain move from its segregated status to become an interdisciplinary track within the major business schools today? How does an academic grounding in the importance of SCM become an equal requirement for the future C Suite executives? To make the real differences we are capable of, we need to have a permanent and expected seat at the BIG business table of every corporation around the world.

How do we measure the impacts of supply chain when the very structure of that supply chain shifts constantly? How do we allocate environmental impacts to products?
